If you are using one length of wire, you have to put the fixtures 15-30 ft away from the transformer. On the next run of wires, you should put the fixtures 25- 40 ft away from the low voltage lighting transformer, the next would be 30-50 ft away.

The main purpose is to ensure that the fixtures are equidistant from the transformer so that the voltage drop is equally distributed. The transforomer would certainly ensure that the lights and the fixtures don’t get over volted or under volted.

Most kits come with the right transformer for the kind and the number of lights given with the kit. So, you just have to make sure that you follow the instructions- you would certainly not have to worry about the wattage of the transformer, because it will be right in the kit.
